BOSTON -- More Massachusetts gas stations may soon offer an option that could save drivers some serious cash.

Paying cash for cheaper gas could become the norm, if some Massachusetts lawmakers get their way.

Right now, some independent gas stations are allowed to offer discounts to customers who pay with cash.

A new bill would allow franchise station owners to do the same.

Right now, many big-name oil companies ban stations from charging less for gas purchases.

Now, more than two dozen state lawmakers have co-sponsored a bill that would change the way some oil companies do business.

According to the Boston Globe, lawmakers want to level the playing field and allow franchise owners at least the option of not paying fees on credit card purchases.

Dealers can pay anywhere from 5 to 8 cents per gallon in credit card fees.

One Needham gas station recently shelled out $13,000 in fees and that's just for one month.

Lawmakers are very hopeful about the bill, which is based on legislation already passed in Connecticut.
