Mass. Primary Rules For Unenrolled Voters

In Massachusetts, an unenrolled voter, commonly referred to as independent or unaffiliated, can vote in the Primary Election.

According to the Massachusetts Elections Division, during the presidential primary, unenrolled voters are asked to choose one ballot to vote with -- either a Democratic, Republican, Green-Rainbow or Working Families ballot. No matter what party ballot is chosen, the voter's party status will not change from unenrolled, unless they choose to register as that party.

Voters who are enrolled in a political party can vote in the primary for the party in which they are enrolled. For example, voters enrolled as Democrats can only vote with the Democratic ballot.

Unenrolled voters will only be allowed to vote with one party ballot.
