Toronto, ON -- (Sports Network) - Brad Boyes scored the game-winner in the shootout as the St. Louis Blues downed the Toronto Maple Leafs, 5-4, at Air Canada Centre. St. Louis' second shooter, Boyes went from the backhand to the forehand and slid the puck behind Vesa Toskala for the advantage. Paul Kariya and Patrik Berglund each had a goal and an assist while Boyes also lit the lamp in regulation for the Blues, who have won two of three to start the season. Final Score: NY Rangers 4, New Jersey 1 New York, NY (Sports Network) - Aaron Voros notched a pair of goals and an assist, as the New York Rangers downed the New Jersey Devils, 4-1, at Madison Square Garden, continuing their undefeated and torrid start to the season despite playing with heavy hearts. Earlier Monday, Rangers prospect Alexei Cherepanov died while playing for Avangard Omsk of Russia's Kontinental Hockey League. Cherepanov, a 19-year-old who was taken 17th overall in the 2007 draft, collapsed on the bench in the third period and attempts to revive him were unsuccessful. The tragedy put something of a damper on the fact that the Rangers, with the win, started the season 5-0 for the first time since the 1983-84 season, matching a franchise record. Brandon Dubinsky scored and added a pair of helpers for New York, which went 7-0-1 versus New Jersey last season and started this campaign's series with a resounding win. Henrik Lundqvist stopped 25-of-26 shots to record his fourth victory. John Madden scored the lone goal for the Devils, who had won the first two games of the season. Martin Brodeur gave up three goals on 23 shots faced in the loss. Alexander Semin scored twice, Mike Green added a goal and an assist and Milan Jurcina also lit the lamp in the victory. Brent Johnson only allowed one goal on just 10 shots against him, picking up his 100th career victory. The Washington defense was superb -- allowing a franchise-best 10 shots on goal --, while the offense peppered a pair of Vancouver goaltenders with 35 shots. Roberto Luongo saved 20, allowing all five Washington goals past him, and Curtis Sanford was solid in relief, denying all 10 shots he faced. Alexander Edler scored the lone Canucks goal. Final Score: Detroit 3, Carolina 1 Raleigh, NC (Sports Network) - Tomas Holmstrom's power-play goal gave Detroit the lead in the second period and Ty Conklin made 27 saves as the Red Wings beat Carolina, 3-1, dealing the Hurricanes their first loss of the season. Nicklas Lidstrom lit the lamp with the man-advantage and Henrik Zetterberg added an empty-net tally for the defending Stanley Cup champions, who moved to 9-2 with a tie in their last 12 meetings with the Hurricanes. Joseph Corvo scored for the Hurricanes, who wore their new black jerseys for the first time. Cam Ward stopped 33 shots in defeat, as Carolina had won its first two games of the season. Final Score: Nashville 3, Chicago 2 (SO) Chicago, IL (Sports Network) - Rich Peverley and J.P. Ellis made 23 saves to earn the victory. Havlat and Patrick Sharp recorded the goals for the Blackhawks, who have yet to win a game in three tries this season.
