Brockton police said they were forced to shoot and kill a wounded deer on an elementary school's property early Wednesday, shortly after classes had begun for the day.

They said the deer had apparently been wounded by a hunter in Abington but did not die. It then wandered into Brockton and onto the grounds of the Mary E. Baker Elementary School on Quincy Street, the Brockton Enterprise reported.

The shooting took place about 9 a.m., the paper said.

There were no reports of any injuries and it was not clear whether the students at the school witnessed the shooting.

The deer with a large set of antlers was seen limping along a fence on school property in a video posted on the paper's Web site before the city's animal control officers shot it.
