HOLLISTON, Mass. -- Grief counselors will be available at Holliston High School Monday as students, teachers and staffers come to grips with the death of one of the school's young football players after a hit on the practice field."I think the whole school is in shock right now, but we're dealing with it and we all got to get through it together," one student said.Hundreds gathered Sunday at the high school field for a somber candlelight vigil to remember Joseph "Joey" Larracey, 16. They also filled a wall inside the school with goodbye messages and remembrances.
The offensive and defensive lineman, No. 73, died suddenly Friday after being hit during a scrimmage game with Apponequet Regional High School in Lakeville. He felt dizzy, went to the sidelines and then later died at the hospital. Principal Michael Cournoyer said counselors, who have been available all weekend, will continue to try to help the students work through their grief."At times like this, kids don't need counseling. They need the support of their peers and the guidance of adults. And that's what Holliston High is providing. So, I'll just talk to the parents to reassure them that that's what the school day is going to look like," counselor Maria Trozzi said. Many of the students spent the weekend together, offering each other consolation and comfort."Words were ... just weren't enough. Everybody was absolutely devastated. There wasn't a dry eye in the room," Holliston parent John O'Brien said. The football team found strength in numbers, parents said, and school officials are committed to providing a safe haven at the school for grieving students."It's a place where they can get support, where they can be with their friends and where they can process this as a group," Holliston School Superintendent Brad Jackson said.He said he hopes parents send students to school, even if they're hurting. Larracey's wake is scheduled for Wednesday and the funeral is to be held Thursday. The cause of Larracey's death is still under investigation.
