BOSTON -- No Go, Yell Tell is a self-defense program on Cape Cod that teaches kids to get away from approaching strangers. After escaping, the child is taught to run and tell a trusted adult what has happened.
Kids Learn Self Defense When asked what he learned in class on Thursday, Brendan Toenniessen, 5, answered without wavering.
"To defend," said Brendan."The primary goal of self-defense is to get away," said instructor Kelly Carlson, a second-degree black belt.Newscenter 5's Amalia Barreda reported that No Go, Yell Tell is based on Indonesian martial arts. It has two major components. Kids are taught to use their voice and listen to what their gut is telling them."Children know when something doesn't feel right, and what we're doing here is teaching them to listen to that. Listen to their gut. Listen to that energy that says this doesn't feel safe," said program developer Barbara Niggel."It's important, because if you do get caught, then you'll know what to do," said Marty Toenniessen, who is 8 years of age."It's nice to keep yourself safe. It kind of gives you self-confidence, so that you can go around and know that you're gonna be safe if someone ever does attack you," said 11-year-old Chris Holler. The children said the self-confidence they have gotten through learning self-defense has helped them elsewhere."It helped me boost up my grades in school. It helped me improve in math. I can understand more now. My mind is clearer," said Victoria Williamson, who is 10 years old.The program is offered at Willy's Gyms, which are owned by Niggel. She believes the classes are so important, they are offered free of charge.
