5 Remain Hospitalized After Lightning Strike

BOSTON -- Five of the 10 people hit by lightning in Dorchester remain hospitalized Monday.

NewsCenter 5's Jack Harper reported that the victims were watching a soccer game on Sunday at Franklin Field when the tree they sought shelter under during a thunderstorm was struck by lightning.

"We could see people laying on the sidewalk and the ground -- some were sitting and some were laying down," EMT Bill DeYoung said.

The lightning bolt went into the top of the tree. DeYoung and his crew arrived at the scene in less than two minutes.

"The one patient I was taking care of said he heard the thunder. That was the last thing he remembers. Then, he remembers waking up in the ambulance," DeYoung said.

"It was pretty bad, and the rain was pouring so hard. We had to hide under a tree, and then we saw the lightning," witness Maslax Ali said.

"It was like doomsday or something. It was just bad. I knew somebody had to get hit by lightning because it was pretty bad out here," witness Ayiayanle Ali said.
