Rangers Name Mike Maddux Pitching Coach

POSTED: 6:48 pm EST November 3, 2008

(Sports Network) - The Texas Rangers named Mike Maddux pitching coach on Monday, while also announcing that Andy Hawkins, who finished the 2008 campaign as the Rangers pitching coach, will remain on the staff as bullpen coach.

"As we've said since the end of the season, improving our pitching staff is our top priority for next season," said Texas general manager Jon Daniels. "Mike has a proven track record at the major league level. He has both coached a staff that has been in postseason contention each of the last two years, and also helped develop young pitchers. Andy did an admirable job under tough circumstances this season and we welcome him back to the staff as bullpen coach."

Maddux, 47, served as the pitching coach for the Milwaukee Brewers from 2003-08. His pitching staff ranked second in the National League with a 3.85 ERA this past season, the lowest figure by a Milwaukee club in 16 years.

The brother of four-time Cy Young award-winner Greg Maddux, Mike played 15 seasons in the major leagues for nine different teams, posting a career record of 39-37 with a 4.05 ERA in 472 games with the Philadelphia Phillies, Los Angeles Dodgers, San Diego Padres, New York Mets, Pittsburgh Pirates, Boston Red Sox, Seattle Mariners, Montreal Expos and Houston Astros.

Hawkins replaced Mark Connor, who was fired as Rangers pitching coach in August.
