A home improvement contractor has been permanently barred from doing business in the state, Attorney General Martha Coakley announced Thursday.

The action comes after Team 5 Investigates reported on deceptive and shoddy work done by Dino DiStefano.

Coakley’s office obtained a judgment in Suffolk Superior Court against Dino DiStefano, 41, of Boston, charging that he “scammed Massachusetts homeowners by fraudulently advertising that he was a registered and insured home improvement contractor.”

The complaint alleged that at least 21 homeowners paid DiStefano more than $145,000 for work that he failed to begin or complete.

The judgment ordered DiStefano to pay $29,634.68 in restitution to Massachusetts consumers and $20,000 in civil penalties to the state.

DiStefano did business as Metro West Painting Contractors, Perfection Sudbury Painting Contractors, and New England Construction.

The judgment permanently prohibits DiStefano from providing home improvement services in the state, Coakley's office said.
