BOSTON -- A case of MRSA -- an antibiotic resistant bacterial infection -- has been reported at a Franklin middle school.A person at the Annie Sullivan Middle School tested positive for the infection, according to a letter that was distributed by the school on Friday."There is no threat to the student population," the letter read, in part. "Additionally, the school will be completely sanitized thoroughly over the weekend by a team of out facilities staff."
MRSA is a type of Staphylococcus aureus “staph” bacterium that is resistant to some antibiotics, such as penicillin and amoxicillin. It is spread through skin-to-skin contact with an infected individual and can also be spread through contact with items that the infected individual touched.Symptoms include redness, swelling, headache, fever, fatigue, and in severe cases pneumonia and infection to the bloodstream.
