Tough Stains Disappear With Right Solution

Vinegar Can Work Stain-Removing Miracles

UPDATED: 6:27 am EDT July 11, 2008

Garnell Jeter was shocked when her daughter dreamed that she was sitting on the toilet and ended up wetting the bed.

"I immediately stripped the bed so that I could wash the bed linen," she said. "She was really embarrassed, so I didn't want to make matters worse."

Jeter was concerned about not making her 14-year-old daughter feel bad about wetting the bed, but she was also worried about cleaning the mattress and getting rid of what could develop into an embarrassing stain.

She grabbed bleach, laundry detergent, a bucket of water and a brush. She used the concoction with good results.

Jeter, like many people, has to deal with getting a variety of stains out of all types of things.

Terri McGraw, who calls herself Mrs. Fix It, has a stain solution on her Web site for just about every stain imaginable.

Most Difficult Stains

McGraw said some of the most common stains include ink, paint and blood. McGraw said there is no need to fret about them.

"None are too bad to get out. You just need the right solution," she said. (With) ink, treat with hairspray. Paint? White shaving cream. And blood? Hydrogen peroxide."

McGraw said that mild acids are great "because they attack the base of the stain." Mild acids include white vinegar, cream of tartar, lemon juice and aspirin. Aspirin contains salicylic acid.

She added that toothpaste is a "wonderful mild abrasive and stain remover because the whiteners in the toothpaste work with the grit to remove stains."

Hydrogen peroxide "is oxygen-based and breaks stains apart in the fabric," she said.

Most people may think that blood or red wine are difficult stains to remove, but McGraw said that baby formula has actually been the toughest for her.

"Baby formula is rough because it looks like it's gone when it's not. It reappears once the item is dry," she said. "They key is unflavored meat tenderizer. It attacks the protein in the formula the same way that it does the proteins in the meat."

She suggested the same solution for getting grass stains out, also.

Cleaning Household Stains

Corina Wilson of Mrs. Clean House Cleaning Specialists, offers several tips to get rid of tough stains while cleaning your home.

"Maintaining a clean home is part of having a happy home where people enjoy living," Wilson said.

When cleaning any stain, it is important to get to it quickly.

For carpet stains, Wilson said it is important to blot.

"Always blot stains rather than scrub them," she said. "It’s tempting to get in there and scrub the carpet pile, but this can actually do more damage by forcing the stain farther into the carpet."

A lot of households have dealt with a stain on a chair or sofa.

For those butter stains, Wilson said, dry cleaning solvent and a white cloth will do the trick. It is also important to blot this type of stain.

Spills happen, and if there is a coffee drinker in a home, there may be a few coffee stains on an upholstered chair or sofa.

"To get rid of a coffee stain, mix one teaspoon of a PH-balanced detergent with one cup of warm water, then blot from the outside in," she said. "Follow this with blotting the stain with a mixture of one-third cup white vinegar (mixed) with two-thirds cup water."

White vinegar can also work wonders on those stubborn pet stains. To get rid of them, Wilson said, baking soda and a mild detergent can also be used. If the scent lingers after the stain has been cleaned, sprinkle baking soda over the area and let it set overnight, then vacuum the area.
